Call Filter How to Use Guide

Call Filter alerts you to incoming spam calls and lets you report and block unwanted numbers. Plus, you'll see a name, picture, city and state when you receive an incoming call, text or voicemail from an unknown number.

    Subscribe to Call Filter and get the app

    Subscribe to Call Filter

    The Call Filter app is pre-loaded on most Android® and some BlackBerry® devices. To begin using the service, you can subscribe from the Call Filter  app or online in My Verizon. Learn how to download the Call Filter app.

    Call Filter app (Android)

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Account.
    3. Tap Subscription status.
    4. Tap Subscribe now.

    You have successfully subscribed to Call Filter through the app.

    Call Filter app (iPhone®)

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Get Call Filter.
    3. Tap Subscribe.

    You have successfully subscribed to Call Filter through the app from your iPhone.

    Online in My Verizon

    1. Go to the Products & Apps page in My Verizon.
    2. Tap or click Get it Now next to Call Filter.
    3. If you have multiple lines on your account, select the ones you want to subscribe to Call Filter.
    4. Tap or click Confirm Purchase.

    You've successfully added Call Filter online.

    10-Day Free Trial

    • Android and Blackberry: When you buy or upgrade to a new Android or Blackberry smartphone, you'll automatically be enrolled in the 10-day, risk-free trial. You'll receive a push notification from the pre-loaded Call Filter app when you've been successfully enrolled.

    • iPhone: When you buy or upgrade to a new iPhone, you'll automatically be enrolled in the 10-day, risk-free trial. You'll receive a text message inviting you to download the Call Filter app in the App Store® when you've been successfully enrolled. If you don't receive a text message after buying or upgrading to a new iPhone, simply download the app to see if you're eligible for a trial and follow the steps listed to get started.

    Android

    The Call Filter app is pre-loaded on most Android and some Blackberry devices.

    iPhone

    To download Call Filter on your iPhone:

    1. Go to the Verizon Call Filter page in App Store.
    2. If you see an option to update or install, then you'll need to do so. If you don't see an option to update or install, the app is up to date and ready to open.

Spam Calls and Blocking

    Mark a number as spam

    Use the Call Filter app to mark unwanted numbers as spam. Once marked, that number will be labeled as spam when they call you again.

    Android

    To mark a number as spam:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Recent Activity.
    3. Under Identified callers & texters, tap the number you want to mark as spam.
    4. Tap Mark as spam.
    5. Add an optional label to remind you how to respond if the number calls you again and tap OK. You have successfully marked the number as spam.
    6. You'll also have the option to report this number to us. To report the number, select a category that best describes the type of caller. You can also add any additional details.
    7. Tap Report.

    You've successfully marked and reported a number.

    iPhone

    To enter a number manually:

    1. Open Call Filter.
    2. Tap the + (plus sign) next to My spam list.
    3. Enter a phone number and select a label that best describes the type of caller. Add an optional name to remind you how to respond if the number calls you again.
    4. Tap Add.

    You've successfully marked a number as spam.

    To add a number from the Call Log:

    1. Go to your iPhone call log and tap the i icon next to the number.
    2. Tap Share Contact.
    3. Tap the lower More button.
    4. Tap the Search Call Filter switch so it's green.
    5. Tap Search Call Filter to lookup the number in the app.
    6. Tap Mark as Spam to mark it as a spam number.

    Report a number as spam

    Use the Call Filter app to report spam numbers. Reporting unwanted numbers helps us improve the accuracy of the service. Before you can report a number as spam you’ll need to first mark it as spam. Learn how to mark a number as spam.

    Android

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Recent Activity.
    3. Tap the spam number you want to report. If you don't see the number you want to report you need to first mark it as spam. Learn how to mark a number as spam.
    4. Tap Report Number.
    5. Select the category that applies.
    6. Leave an optional comment with any details about the caller that may be helpful to others.

    You've successfully reported a number as spam.

    iPhone

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Mark the number as spam. To learn how, refer to the Mark a number as spam section in this guide.
    3. In the My spam list section, tap the number you want to report.
    4. Tap Report caller.
    5. Select a category that best describes the type of caller and enter any additional comments about the caller.
    6. Tap Report.

    You've successfully reported a number as spam.

    Automatically block spam calls

    Use the Call Filter app to set up a spam filter to automatically block different types of spam calls.

    Android

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Block management.
    3. Tap Spam filter.
    4. Toggle feature on (spam filter on when toggle is black and to the right).
    5. Select the level of risk you want to block.

    iPhone

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap the Block tab at the top of the page.
    3. Tap Spam filter.
    4. Toggle feature on (spam filter on when toggle is black and to the right).
    5. Select the level of risk you want to block.

    You've successfully turned on your spam filter.

    Block a number

    Use the Call Filter app to block a number from calling you. Before you can block a number you need to first mark it as spam. Learn how to mark a number as spam.

    Android

    To block a recently identified number:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Recent activity.
    3. Select the spam number you'd like to block. If you don't see the number listed you'll need to first mark it as spam before returning to this step. Learn how to mark a number as spam..
    4. Tap Block number.

    You've successfully added a number to your block list.

    To manually enter a number to block:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap the Block management.
    3. Tap the + (plus sign) next to My block list.
    4. Enter a number or add from contacts, and enter a name that best describes the type of caller.
    5. Tap Block.

    You've successfully added a number to your block list.

    iPhone

    To block a number from your call log:

    1. Go to your iPhone call log and tap the i icon next to the number.
    2. Tap Share Contact.
    3. Tap the lower More button.
    4. Enable Search Call Filter.
    5. Tap Search Call Filter to lookup the number in the app.
    6. Tap Block Caller.

    You've successfully blocked a number from your call log.

    To manually enter a number to block:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap the Block tab at the top of the page.
    3. Tap the + (plus sign) next to My block list.
    4. Enter a number and select a label that best describes the type of caller.
    5. Tap Block.

Numbers / Contacts

    Save identified numbers to contacts

    Call Filter identifies unknown numbers not previously saved to your contacts. You can easily save identified numbers to your contacts with Call Filter.

    Android:

    1. Tap Recent activity.
    2. Select the person you'd like to save to contacts.
    3. Tap Add to contacts. You'll be taken to your default contact application to save.

    You've successfully added the number to your contacts.

    iPhone:

    1. Go to your iPhone call log and tap the i icon next to the number.
    2. Tap Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact.

    You've successfully added the number to your contacts.

Customize and Manage

    Customize your name

    You can create a custom name on the Share Name ID page or in the My Verizon app, or in the Call Filter app. Share Name ID is a free service that lets you customize the name that Call Filter subscribers see on certain outbound calls.

    The Account Owner or an Account Manager can manage Share Name ID. Learn more about account access roles.

    Online in My Verizon

    To add or edit your Share Name ID online:

    1. Go to the Share Name ID page in My Verizon.
    2. Select the line you'd like to manage.
    3. Select one of the options listed.

      Note: If you want to create a custom name, select the option with the Enter Name field and enter the name you wish to display on outgoing calls.

    4. Click Submit.
    5. Click OK in the pop-up window.

    You've successfully updated Share Name ID in My Verizon.

    Call Filter app

    Android

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Account.
    3. Tap Profile.
    4. Tap Edit Share Name ID. You'll be taken to the My Verizon app or web page to edit your name.
    5. Enter the name you wish to display on outgoing calls.
    6. Tap Update.

    You've successfully updated your Share Name ID.

    iPhone

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Profile.
    3. Tap Edit Name. You'll be taken to the My Verizon app or web page to edit your name.
    4. Enter the name you wish to display on outgoing calls.
    5. Tap Update.

    You've successfully updated your Share Name ID.

    My Verizon app

    To edit your Share Name ID in the My Verizon app:

    1. Go to the Devices tab and select the device you want to manage.
    2. Tap Edit Share Name ID.
    3. Tap Enter Share Name ID.
    4. Enter the name you wish to display on outgoing calls.
    5. Tap Update.

    You've successfully updated your Share Name ID in the My Verizon app.

    Manage pictures

    With the Call Filter app you can upload and change the picture that people see when you call them. You can also block or report any Call Filter ID pictures that may be in appropriate.

    Set up your picture that others see

    You can upload your Call Filter picture with the Call Filter app. The maximum file size is 2 MB and the acceptable formats are JPG and PNG.

    To upload a picture with the Call Filter app (Android only):

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Account.
    3. Tap Profile
    4. Tap pencil on image.
    5. Choose the type of picture you want to use:
      • Take a new picture: Your camera app will open so you can take a picture.
      • Choose an existing picture: Select an image that's already on your device.
    6. To crop the picture, you can pinch to zoom in and out or drag the picture to reposition it.
    7. Tap Done.
    8. Tap Use Picture if you're pleased with the image. If you want a different one tap Choose another and repeat steps 4 and 5.
    9. Accept the Terms & Conditions.

    The image will display in the Call Filter picture section.

    Block and report a picture

    If a caller's picture is inappropriate you can block or report it in the Call Filter app. You can also choose to block all pictures from displaying.

    Block a caller's picture:

    To block or report a caller's picture:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Block management.
    3. Tap Manage caller pictures.
    4. Tap Block/Report Pictures.
    5. Select the caller picture you want to block or report.

    You have successfully blocked a caller's picture.

    Block all caller pictures

    To block all caller pictures from showing on the incoming call screen:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap the checkbox next to Show Caller Pictures so it is blank.

    You have successfully blocked all caller pictures.

    Set up alerts (Android only)

    You can set up an alert so you're notified when an unknown caller or texter is identified.

    To set up alerts:

    1. Open the Call Filter app.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap Identified Number Alert to turn alerts on and off. Alerts are on when the check is present.

Unsubscribe

    Unsubscribe from Call Filter

    If you want to cancel your subscription to Call Filter, you need to unsubscribe in the app, remove it from your account in My Verizon or contact us. Uninstalling the app from your device will not unsubscribe you from the service.

    To remove the Call Filter service from a line on your account:

    1. Go to the Products & Apps page in My Verizon.
    2. Click the Manage Your Products tab at the top of the page.
    3. If you have multiple lines on your account, select the line you want to remove Call Filter from.
    4. Scroll to Verizon Call Filter and click Remove from Account.
    5. Review the changes and bill impacts on the confirmation pop-up, and then click Remove Product to confirm the transaction.

    Note: You can only remove a product from one line at a time. To remove the same product from another line, select that line and repeat steps 4 and 5.

    You've successfully unsubscribed from Call Filter through My Verizon.

    If you have an eligible Android or BlackBerry device, you can also unsubscribe from the Call Filter app on your device:

    1. Go to the Call Filter app on your device.
    2. Tap Account.
    3. Tap Subscription Status.
    4. Tap Unsubscribe.
    5. Tap Continue to confirm your selection.

    You've successfully unsubscribed from Call Filter through the app.
