How to Use Guide: Verizon Smart Family™

Verizon Smart Family is a service that you can use to monitor the activity of each device on your account, set usage limits for each device, and help your children understand how to use their devices safely and responsibly. The insights this service provides are especially helpful for parents and anyone with multiple family members on the same account.

Sign Up / Sign in

    New Users
    1. Tap Get started from the landing page.


    2. Sign in to Verizon Smart Family using your My Verizon sign-in credentials
      .

    3. Select your desired Verizon Smart Family plan, then tap Next.


    4. Select the lines you'd like to add to Verizon Smart Family.


    5. Name the lines you're adding (optional), then tap Sign up.


    6. Tap OK.
    Existing Users
    1. Tap Get started from the landing page.


    2. Sign in to Verizon Smart Family using your My Verizon sign-in credentials.


    3. Tap Accept to accept the Terms and Conditions.


    4. You've successfully signed in to Verizon Smart Family.

Dashboard

    Verizon Smart Family vs. Verizon Smart Family Premium dashboard (View)
    1. Verizon Smart Family allows subscribers to set limits, view call and text activity and block inappropriate content (after the Child devices are paired). Location functionality is only available on Verizon Smart Family Premium.


    2. Verizon Smart Family allows subscribers to set limits, view call and text activity, block inappropriate content and locate Child lines (once the Child devices are paired).
    Pausing Child's Internet (Functionality)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker, then tap Pause internet.


    2. Tap OK.


    3. You've successfully paused your child's internet.
    Unpausing Child's Internet (Functionality)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker, then tap Unpause internet.


    2. You've successfully unpaused your child's internet.

Map / Location

    Successful Locates
    1. Select the Child from the top row of Contacts. This should begin to locate automatically.


    2. A successful result will display a halo showing the Child's device general area. Tap the Map for more detail.


    3. After tapping the Map, your child's location details and history will appear. Tap an individual result for more detail.
    Saving a Place
    1. After a Family Member is successfully located, tap the Map to show location results.


    2. Tap the individual location result you'd like to save.


    3. Name the Place, add an optional Arrival or Departure alert, then tap Save.


    4. You'll be redirected back to the Map, where you'll see your newly saved Place.
    Viewing Location History
    1. Tap the Map to view location result details.


    2. A list of previous location requests will appear. Tap an individual location result to view it in more detail.


    3. The result will show on the Map with the location details.
    Calling
    1. After a successful locate, tap the Map to show location results.


    2. You'll have the option to call or text the child. To make a call, tap the Action icon, then tap Call.
           
    Messaging
    1. After a successful locate, tap the Map to show location results.


    2. You'll have the option to call or text the child. To send a text, tap the Action icon, then tap Text.
           

Controls

    Content Filters (requires pairing)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Content filters.


    4. Tap all Content categories you want to block.


    5. Each category has filters that can be turned on and off. To block all filters in a Category, tap the All [Desired Filter] switch at the top of the screen.


    6. When you’re done, tap Save.


    7. For additional details about what each Category blocks, tap More info.
    Content Filters Survey (requires pairing)
    1. At the end of each Filter Category, there's an option to tell us we missed something.
    2. Select a filter, then scroll down to the bottom of the page.
    3. Tap Looking for something not listed?
    4. Fill out the survey, then tap Submit.
    Removing All Content Filters (requires pairing)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Content filters.


    4. Tap the Remove all button in the top right corner.


    5. Tap Remove all content filters.


    6. Tap OK from the pop-up showing the removal process is complete.
    Content Filters / Websites (requires pairing)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Content filters.


    4. Scroll down, then tap Websites.


    5. Tap Trusted to add a website to the Trusted Websites list. Tap Blocked to add a website to your Blocked Websites list.
    Time Limits
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Limits.


    4. Tap Time restrictions.


    5. Creating Time Restrictions
      • Add School or Night Hours by tapping School hours or Night hours and adjusting the recommended Time Restrictions. To put the Time Restrictions into effect, tap Save.


      • Add custom Time Restrictions by tapping Add time restrictions. Choose the days and times you want the custom Time Limit to go into effect. To put the Time Limit into effect, tap Save.
    6. Removing Time Restrictions
      • Select the limit you'd like to remove, then tap Remove.
    Data Target Limits
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Limits.


    4. Tap Data target.


    5. Creating a Data Target
      • Enter a Data Target (in GB) for the Family Member.


      • To be notified when the Child reaches the set Data Target, tap Don’t block data, but alert me when the limit is reached.


      • To put the Data Target into effect, tap Save.
    6. Removing a Data Target
      • Tap the Data Target for the Family Member.
      • Tap Remove, then confirm the removal by tapping Remove again.
    Purchase Limits
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Limits.


    4. Tap Purchase limits.


    5. Creating a Purchase Limit
      • Enter a dollar amount to set a Purchase Limit. To put the Purchase Limit into effect, tap Save.


    6. Removing a Purchase Limit
      • Tap the Purchase Limit that you've set.
      • Tap Remove.
    Text Limits
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Limits.


    4. Tap Text limit.
       

    5. Creating a Text Limit
      • Enter a maximum number of text messages you'll allow the Child to send and receive in a month. To put the text limit into effect, tap Save.


    6. Removing a Text Limit
      • Tap the text limit you've set.
      • Tap Remove.
    Call Limits
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Limits.


    4. Tap Call limits.


    5. Creating a Call Limit
      • Enter a Call Limit (measured in minutes per month). To put the Call Limit into effect, tap Save.


    6. Removing a Call Limit
      • Tap the Call Limit you've set.
      • Tap Remove.
    Location Alerts (Arrival / Departure Alerts)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.



    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Location alerts.


    4. Tap Places & alerts.


    5. Adding Places & Alerts
      • Tap Add a place.


      • Enter the Place name and address, tap either the Arrival alert or Departure alert switch, then tap Save.


    6. Removing Places & Alerts
      • Select the Place Alert you want to remove.


      • Tap Remove.


      • Tap Remove.
    Location Alerts (Scheduled Alerts)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Location alerts.


    4. Tap Scheduled alerts.


    5. Adding a Scheduled Alert
      • Tap Add an alert.


      • Set the Day and Time to be notified.


    6. Removing a Scheduled Alert
      • Select the Scheduled Alert you want to remove.


      • Tap Remove.
    Contacts (Blocked and Trusted)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Contacts.


    4. Tap Blocked contacts.


    5. To add a Blocked Contact, tap Blocked contacts, then tap Block a number. Type in the phone number, then tap Save.
        

      • You can also block all private and restricted texts and calls by tapping the switch above your Blocked Numbers list.


      • To remove a number from the Blocked Numbers list, tap the X to the right of the number. Tap Remove.
          

    6. Go back to the Contacts menu, then tap Trusted contacts.


    7. To add a Trusted Contact, tap Trusted contacts, then tap Trust a number. Type the phone number, then tap Save.
        
      • To remove a number from the Trusted Numbers list, tap the X to the right of the number, then tap Remove.
          
    Contacts (Top Contacts)
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Manage controls.

    3. Tap Contacts.


    4. Tap Top contacts.


    5. Select a contact.


    6. Tap Contact type.
    7. To add the contact to the child's Watchlist, tap Watchlist. Then tap Save.
          

Activity

    Viewing Child's Call and Text Activity
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down to Activity.

    3. Tap View more.


    4. Select Texts or Calls at the top of the graph for a detailed view of the day's Activity.
    Viewing Activity During School / Night Hours
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Scroll down past the map to the Activity graph.

    3. Select Shool or Night under the graph to view Activity during these time periods.

Upgrade

    Upgrading to Verizon Smart Family Premium
    1. Tap Upgrade to Premium.


    2. Tap Upgrade for $5 more per month.


    3. Tap OK.

Settings

    My Family
    1. Select the Family Member you'd like to look at.
        

    2. Tap Role.


    3. Tap Location sharing.


      • Select your desired Location Sharing options, then tap Save.


    4. Tap Smart Family Companion.


      • This setting shows you if the line has the Verizon Smart Family Companion app installed.


      • Tap Add to add the Verizon Smart Family Companion app to the new line.
      • To remove the Verizon Smart Family Companion app from the line, tap Remove.
    Notifications
    1. From Settings, tap Notifications.


    2. Tap the child whose Notifications you'd like to manage.


    3. Adjust Notification settings as needed.
    Account Details
    1. From Settings, tap Account details.


    2. From Account details, you can manage your time zone and subscription.


    Touch ID (iOS only, except iPhone® X®)
    1. From Settings, tap Touch ID.


    2. To activate Touch ID, tap the Touch ID switch to the on position, then tap Save.
    Face ID (iPhone X only)
    1. From Settings, tap Face ID.


    2. To activate Face ID, tap the Face ID switch to the on position, then tap Save.
    About
    1. From Settings, tap About.


    2. From the About section, you can access Terms of Service, the Privacy Policy, Licenses and the Verizon Smart Family app version you're using.
    Log Out
    1. From Settings, tap Log Out.

Verizon Smart Family Companion App

    Pair the Child app - iOS
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Tap Pause internet, Add protection or Content filters.


    3. Tap Next.


    4. Enter the Child's age to get the appropriate protection level, then tap Next.


    5. Tap OK.


    6. You have the option to block or customize each Category.


    7. Tap Pair phone.


    8. Tap Send.


    9. Tap OK.


    10. On the Child's iOS device, open the text message and follow the included instructions.


    11. You'll see a screen that reads "Verifying phone", followed by a screen that says "Pair phone". Tap Show me how.


    12. Next, you'll see a demo showing how to pair the Child's iOS device. Tap Got it underneath the demo to continue.


    13. You'll be taken to the Child's iOS system settings. Tap Install, then tap Trust. Then tap Done. Tap OK.


    14. When you're done, tap OK on the Parent device.
    Pair the Child app - Android®
    1. Select the Child from the Family Picker.


    2. Tap Pause internet, Add protection or Content filters.


    3. Tap Next.


    4. Enter the Child's age to get the appropriate protection level, then tap Next.


    5. Select OK.


    6. You have the option to block or customize each Category.


    7. Tap Pair phone.


    8. Tap Send.


    9. Tap OK.


    10. Open the Child's Android device, then open the text message sent from the Parent app.


    11. You'll see a screen that reads "Verifying phone", followed by a screen that says "Pair phone". Tap Show me how.


    12. View the tutorial, then tap Got it to continue.


    13. You'll be taken to the Child device's Accessibility settings. Scroll down to Smart Family Companion. Tap this option.


    14. Tap OK from the pop-up that appears, then tap the Smart Family Companion switch to the on position.


    15. Wait for a moment while the while the pairing initializes.


    16. When you're done, you'll see a confirmation screen on the Child device.


    17. You'll also see a notification pop-up on the Parent device, then tap OK.

Child Dashboard

    Child Dashboard
    1. Once the Child device is connected, the Child can view their own dashboard, including Family Members locations.

Location Requests

    Requesting Location of Another Contact / Location Sharing
    1. The Child can select another Family Member from the Family Picker.


    2. If the line isn't already set to share its location, the Child can request location information for this line by tapping Request location.


    3. The Child will also have the option to call or text the contact directly from the app.

Child Block Experience

    Child Block Experience
    1. When a Child visits a blocked website or app, they'll see a screen informing them "This website is blocked".
