First time setup and activation - out of the box experience - Samsung Galaxy Note5

Note This device comes with the SIM card already inserted.

Caution Are you upgrading from an existing Verizon Wireless device? Yes or No.

  1. If powered off, press and hold the Power button (located on the right edge) until the Samsung logo appears then release.
  2. Tap the appropriate language then tap Next (located in the lower-right).
  3. From the "Verify your account" screen, enter the Account PIN then follow the onscreen prompts.
    Note See Account PIN FAQs for additional info.
  4. Turn off your old phone to ensure the activation process completes.
  5. From the Phone activation screen, tap Next.
  6. From the Add your account (Google) screen, tap Add an Existing Google Account or Create a New Google Account.
  7. From the Google services screen, tap any of the following services to On indicator or off Off indicator then tap NEXT.
    • Automatically backup device data
    • Use Google's location service to help apps
    • Improve location accuracy
    • Help improve your Android experience
  8. From the "Which device?" screen, tap Don't restore.
  9. From the Protect your phone screen, tap one of the following then tap Next (or SKIP, if applicable):
  10. From the Verizon Cloud screen, tap Next to complete setup.
  11. From the Email setup screen, add your email account(s). Click here to see how.
  12. From the Setup Wizard summary screen, tap Done (located in the lower right).
  13. From the Samsung account screen, tap Learn more to find out what this feature is. If you would like to use it, click here. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  14. Congratulations! Your device set up is complete!

Verizon Cloud

  1. Tap the items you would like Verizon Cloud to back up then tap Next.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
  2. Choose how you would like Verizon Cloud to back up content:
    • Wi-Fi Only
    • Both Wi-Fi and Mobile Networks
  3. Tap Done with Cloud.

Email Setup

  1. Tap the account type.
  2. Enter the Email address then tap Next.
    Note Depending upon the email account type, the available options may vary
    Note If Microsoft Exchange Active Sync was selected, then complete these steps
  3. Enter the password then tap Next.
  4. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., Username, Password,Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
  5. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., SMTP server, Port, Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
  6. Configure Account options as appropriate then tap Next.
  7. Enter an account name if desired then tap Next.
    Note If presented, ensure a name is entered for outgoing messages

Corporate Email Setup (Exchange Active Sync)

Note For all advanced-level configuration and troubleshooting, contact your Exchange / IT admin for assistance.

  1. Enter your corporate email address and password then tap Next (located in the lower-right).
    Note If set up is unsuccessful, tap to go back, tap Manual Setup then set up manually (begin with step 4).
  2. If needed, engage your Exchange / IT admin for additional support on:
    • Email address
    • Server address
    • Domain
    • Port number
    • Username
    • Password
    • Activate device administration
      • To apply corporate security policy (e.g., Set up password, Device encryption).
        Note Device encryption can exceed 60 minutes.
    • Sync options (e.g., Email, Contacts, Calendar)

Manually Setup Corporate Email Setup (Exchange Active Sync)

    • Username

Add an Existing Google Account

  1. Enter the email address then tap Next (located in the lower right).
  2. Enter the email password then tap Next.
  3. From the Sync your account screen, configure the appropriate sync settings (e.g., Sync Contacts, Sync Calendar, etc.) then tap Next.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.

Go back to continue with step 7 of first time setup

Create a New Google Account

  1. Enter the appropriate name into the following fields then tap Next (located in the lower right).
    • First name
    • Last name
  2. Locate the Username field and enter the desired username then tap Next.
  3. Enter then re-enter the preferred password then tap Next.
    Note The password must be at least 8 characters.
  4. From the Rescue info screen, ensure the correct phone number is listed then tap Next.
  5. From the Confirm phone number screen, ensure the correct phone number is listed then tap Send It.
  6. Tap Agree to accept the terms and conditions.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. From the Google services screen, tap Keep me up to date... to enable or disable then tap Next.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
  9. From the Set up payment info screen, select Remind me later then tap Next.
    Note Payment info can be completed later by navigating Apps > Play Store from a Home screen, tap a paid app, tap Continue then select a payment method.
  10. From the Sync your account screen, tap the appropriate sync settings (e.g., Sync Contacts, etc.) to enable or disable then tap Next.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.

Set Up Pattern Lock

Note An unlock pattern is created then utilized to unlock the device.

  1. Draw an unlock pattern (connecting at least 4 dots) then tap Continue.
  2. Re-draw the pattern then tap Confirm.
  3. Set a backup PIN.
  4. From the Notifications screen, select a display option for notifications on the lock screen then tap Next.

Set Up PIN Lock

Note A PIN is created then utilized to unlock the device.

  1. Enter a numeric PIN (4 -16 digits) then tap Continue.
  2. Re-enter the numeric PIN then tap OK.
  3. From the Notifications screen, select a display option for notifications on the lock screen then tap Next.

Set Up Password Lock

Note A password is created then utilized to access the device.

  1. Enter a password (4 -16 characters) then tap Continue.
  2. Re-enter the password then tap OK.
  3. From the Notifications screen, select a display option for notifications on the lock screen then tap Next.

Set Up Fingerprint Lock

Note Note: A fingerprint is utilized to unlock the device. For the fingerprint scanner to operate, hands must be clean and free of moisture, dirt, oil, lotion, dyes, etc.

  1. Review the Disclaimer then tap OK.
  2. From the Register fingerprint screen, swipe your finger 8 times down the pad located at the bottom (as shown in the on-screen tutorial).
    Note Swipe entire finger pad from base to tip of finger across the home key.
    Note Keep finger flat against the home key and swipe slowly.
    Note Indicators turn green when successful.
  3. Set a backup Password.
  4. From the Notifications screen, select a display option for notifications on the lock screen then tap Next.

Set Up No Lock

Tap None.

Set Up Samsung Account

Choose the appropriate option:

  • If you have never created a Samsung account before, tap Create Account.
  • If you have created a Samsung account before, tap Sign in.

Create Samsung Account

Note Note: You may choose to log in using your Facebook credentials if you wish, by tapping Use your Facebook info. If you don't want to use Facebook to log in, proceed with the steps below.

  1. Tap Enter email ID field and enter your email address.
  2. Tap Enter password and enter a password between 8 -15 characters.
  3. Tap Show password if you would like the password to be visible on the screen
    Note Enabled when a checkmark is present
  4. Tap Confirm password then retype the password.
  5. Tap the Birthday field and use the up and down arrows to set your birthday then tap OK.
  6. Tap First name then enter your first name.
  7. Tap Last name then enter your last name.
  8. Tap Zip code and enter your zip code then tap Done.
  9. Tap Receive marketing information to enable or disable.
    Note Enabled when a checkmark is present
  10. Tap Next.
  11. Tap Agree after reviewing the Terms and Conditions.
  12. Tap Next.
  13. Follow the steps sent to the email address used to sign up to verify your new Samsung Account.

Sign into Samsung Account

  1. Tap Enter ID and enter your Samsung ID.
  2. Tap Password and enter your password then tap Sign in.

Existing Customers (Only Applies if Upgrading from a Verizon Device)

Note If you're upgrading from iPhone®, you need to turn off iMessage before activating your new phone.

  1. Save Contacts and Content from your Original phone using the Transfer Wizard.
  2. If powered off, press and hold the Power button (located on the right edge) until the Samsung logo appears then release.
  3. Tap the appropriate language then tap Next (located in the lower-right).
  4. From the "Verify your account" screen, enter the Account PIN then follow the onscreen prompts.

  5. Turn off your old phone.

Turn off iMessage®

  1. On your iPhone go to Settings.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. If the indicator next to the iMessage switch is green, tap or slide the switch to turn it off.
    Note When the feature is turned off, the switch is all white.
