Apple® iPhone® - Record and Send Video via Messaging

Note Notes:

  • The following steps also apply to sending via iMessage. When a message is sent, the message type is indicated by different colors.
  • The steps below apply to the following models:
    • iPhone X / XS / XS Max / XR
    • iPhone 8 / 8 Plus 
    • iPhone 7 / 7 Plus
    • iPhone SE
    • iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus
    • iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s
    • iPhone 4 / 4s


  1. From the Home screen, tap the Messages icon Messages icon.
  2. Tap the New Message icon New message icon (upper-right).
  3. From the To field, enter a 10-digit mobile number
    Note Alternatively, enter a contact name. As the name is entered, a matching contact may appear and can be selected at any time.
    Note Repeat this step as necessary to add additional recipients.
  4. From the Text Message field, enter a message.
  5. Tap the Camera icon Camera icon (on the left).
    Note If you don't see the Camera icon, tap the Arrow icon Messaging options icon to the left of the text entry field.
  6. From the camera mode options at the bottom, swipe to the left or right to choose VIDEO.
    Note For iPhone 4 / 4s, tap Take Photo or Video
  7. Aim then tap the Record icon Record icon to begin recording.
    Note Alternatively, press either volume button on the left edge of the device.
  8. When finished, tap the Stop icon Stop to discontinue recording.
  9. Tap Done (upper-right).
    Note For iPhone 4 / 4s, tap Use Video (lower-right)
    Note To discard and record a new video, tap Retake (at the bottom) then repeat step 9.
  10. Tap the Send icon Send Message Icon.
    Note The Send icon appears green when sending a text message and blue when using iMessage.
