Apple® iPhone® - Send Existing Picture via Messaging

Note Notes:

  • The following steps also apply to sending via iMessage. When a message is sent, the message type is indicated by differing colors.
  • To take a new picture then send, refer to Take and Send a Picture via Messaging.
  • The steps below apply to the following models:
    • iPhone X / XS / XS Max / XR
    • iPhone 8 / 8 Plus 
    • iPhone 7 / 7 Plus 
    • iPhone SE
    • iPhone 6 / 6 Plus / 6s / 6s Plus
    • iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s
    • iPhone 4s
  • Follow these steps for the iPhone 4.


  1. From the Home screen, tap the Messages icon Messages icon.
  2. Tap the New Message icon New message icon (upper-right).
  3. From the To field, enter a 10-digit mobile number
    Note Alternately, enter a contact name.
    Note Repeat this step as necessary to add additional recipients.
  4. From the Text Message field, enter a message.
  5. Tap the Camera icon Camera icon (on the left).
    Note If you don't see the Camera icon, tap the Arrow icon Arrow icon (left of the message field).
  6. Tap Photos.
  7. Tap the album (e.g., Camera Roll, Selfies, etc.).
  8. Tap the picture.
  9. Tap Choose (lower-right).
  10. Tap the Send icon Message Reply (in the text field).
    Note The Send icon appears green in text messages or blue in iMessages.
