First time setup and activation - out of the box experience - Samsung Galaxy Tab A (8.0)

Note This device comes with the SIM card already inserted.

Caution Are you upgrading from an existing Verizon Wireless device? Yes or No.

  1. If powered off, press and hold the Power button until the 'Samsung Galaxy Tab A' screen appears then release.
    Power button
  2. From the 'Start' screen, select the appropriate language then tap the arrow in the center of the screen.
    Note Allow several seconds for activation to complete.
  3. To continue, review and accept the Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. Tap the circles to the left of the text to accept, then tap AGREE (lower-right).
  4. If presented with the 'Verify your account' screen, do the following:
    1. Enter the account PIN then follow the onscreen prompts.
      Note See Account PIN FAQs for additional info.
    2. Turn off your old device to ensure the activation process completes.
  5. From the 'Tablet Activation' screen, tap NEXT.
  6. From the 'Set up Wi-Fi' screen, select the network you'd like to connect to and enter the password (if applicable) then tap CONNECT > NEXT (lower-right).
    Note If you'd prefer to setup a Wi-Fi connection at a later time, tap SKIP (lower-right).
  7. From the 'Add your account (Google)' screen, do one of the following:
    • To add an existing account, click here.
    • To create a new Google account, click here.
  8. From the 'Protect your tablet' screen, select one of the following then tap NEXT:
  9. From the 'Google Assistant' screen, tap NEXT, then at the next screen review the required settings and tap TURN ON to continue.
    Note If you'd prefer to setup Google Assistant at a later time, tap SKIP (lower-right).
  10. From the 'Google services' screen, select any of the following to turn on switch on or off switch off then tap I AGREE.
    • Back up to Google Drive
    • Help apps find location
    • Improve location accuracy
    • Send system data
    • Keep me up to date with news and offers from Google Play.
  11. From the 'Email Accounts' screen, add your email account(s). Click here to see how.
    Note If you'd prefer to setup email at a later time, tap SKIP (lower-right).
  12. From the 'Personalize your tablet' screen tap each item to set up your preferences then tap SKIP.
  13. From the 'Ready to go!' screen, tap GOT IT.

Email Setup

  1. Tap the account type.
  2. Enter the Email address and password then tap Sign in (lower-right).
    Note Depending upon the email account type, the available options may vary.
    Note If Microsoft Exchange Active Sync was selected, then complete these steps.
  3. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., Username, Password, Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
    Note If not presented, skip to step 6.
  4. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., SMTP server, Port, Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
  5. Configure account options (e.g., Sync frequency, Inbox download size, etc.) as desired then tap Next.
    Note Depending upon the email account type, the available options may vary.
  6. Enter an account name (optional) then tap Next.
    Note If presented, ensure a name is entered for outgoing messages

Corporate Email Setup (Exchange Active Sync)

Note Notes:

  • The following is provided for informational purposes only. Verizon verifies access to data services only, which can be checked by viewing a website.
  • For all advanced-level configuration and troubleshooting, contact your Exchange/IT admin for assistance.

  1. Enter your corporate email address and password then tap SIGN IN (lower-right).
  2. If needed, engage your Exchange/IT admin for additional support on:
    • Email address
    • Server address
    • Domain
    • Port number
    • Username
    • Password
    • Activate device administration
      • To apply corporate security policy (e.g., Set up password, Device encryption).
        Note Device encryption can exceed 60 minutes.
    • Sync options (e.g., Email, Contacts, Calendar)

Go back to continue with step 12 of first time setup

Add an Existing Google Account

  1. Enter the email address then tap NEXT (lower right).
  2. Enter the email password then tap NEXT.
  3. To continue, review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy then tap I AGREE (lower-right) to continue.
  4. If prompted to restore apps and data from a previous device, tap Don't restore.

Go back to continue with step 8 of first time setup

Create a New Google Account

  1. Enter the appropriate name into the following fields then tap NEXT (lower-right).
    • First name
    • Last name
  2. Fill in the fields on the 'Basic information' screen then tap NEXT.
  3. Locate the Username field and enter the desired username then tap NEXT.
  4. Enter then re-enter the preferred password then tap NEXT.
    Note The password must be at least 8 characters.
  5. From the Add phone number? screen, ensure the correct phone number is listed then tap YES, I'M IN.
  6. From the security code screen, enter the security code you received on the phone number you chose for the recovery number then tap NEXT.
    Note This screen is bypassed if you used the tablet's own phone number as the recovery number.
  7. To continue, tap I agree to accept the terms and conditions.
  8. Tap NEXT.
    Note If presented with a note stating no backups were found, tap NEXT again.

Set Up Pattern Lock

Note An unlock pattern is created to access the device.

  1. Choose whether or not to require pattern entry when your device is turned on then tap CONTINUE.
  2. Draw an unlock pattern (connecting at least 4 dots) then tap CONTINUE.
  3. Draw the same pattern again then tap CONFIRM.
  4. If presented, select an option then tap DONE:
    • Show content
    • Hide content
    • Do not show notifications

Set Up PIN Lock

Note A PIN is created to access the device.

  1. Enter a numeric PIN (4 to 16 digits) then tap CONTINUE.
  2. Re-enter the numeric PIN then tap OK.
  3. If presented, select an option then tap DONE:
    • Show content
    • Hide content
    • Do not show notification

Go back to continue with step 9 of first time setup

Set Up Password Lock

Note A password is created to access the device.

  1. Tap Password.
  2. Enter a password (4 to 16 characters) then tap CONTINUE.
  3. Re-enter the password then tap OK.
  4. If presented, select an option then tap DONE:
    • Show all notification content
    • Hide sensitive notification content
    • Don't show notifications at all

Existing Customers (Only Applies if Upgrading from a Verizon Device)

Note If you're upgrading from iPhone®, you need to turn off iMessage before activating your new phone.

  1. Save Contacts and Content from your Original device using the Transfer Wizard.
  2. Start the Activation process by calling (877) 807-4646 from any phone and follow the prompts.
    Note Have your Customer Receipt available because you are asked to confirm purchase info.
  3. Turn off your Original device.

Turn off iMessage®

  1. On your iPhone go to Settings.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. If the indicator next to the iMessage switch is green, tap or slide the switch to turn it off.
    Note When the feature is turned off, the switch is all white
