Ensure Minimum Speed / Bandwidth Requirements - Verizon Wireless 3G Network Extender (EvDO)

For additional reference, there's a Network Extender Setup Video available on vzw.com.

Note Notes:
  • The Verizon Wireless Network Extender requires an always-on broadband Internet connection with a minimum speed of 3.1 Mbps.
  • The Network Extender is not supported for use with satellite or wireless broadband service.
  • Routers may require special configuration (e.g. Firewall, Quality of Service (QoS) settings) to ensure the best possible call quality.
  • Refer to the Internet Service Provider (ISP), Network Administrator, or equipment manufacturer for assistance with these settings. Examples of router setup are provided here; however, Verizon Wireless doesn't support 3rd party routers.
  • When placing or receiving a call, ensure that all bandwidth intensive processes are disabled. These processes include but are not limited to:
    • File sharing
    • Music/Video streaming
    • Uploading/Downloading files
    • Windows or Antivirus Updates

The table below outlines bandwidth requirements (1 Mbps to support voice and up to 3.1 Mbps to support the maximum EVDO data rate) based on the number of active callers:

Simultaneous Caller Download Speed Requirement Upload Speed Requirement
1 caller 40 kbps 40 kbps
2 callers 80 kbps 80 kbps
3 callers 120 kbps 120 kbps
4 callers 160 kbps 160 kbps
5 callers 200 kbps 200 kbps
6 callers 240 kbps 240 kbps

Note While we cannot recommend a specific site or app, there are many online resources that can help determine if an Internet connection and/or router can support VoIP throughput. Some examples are:

Desktop tests:
Java Based - www.megapath.com/speedtestplus/
Browser Based - verizon.com/speedtest/

If prompted, refer to Install Java for additional information. Alternatively, a variety of apps can test VoIP throughput. Refer to download instructions for Android, iOS, or BlackBerry to locate and install a QoS testing app.

Perform all testing on the same network as the Network Extender.
