Apple® iPad® - Activate / Set Up Device

If you need to transfer contacts and media from from an older iPhone (prior to iOS 11) or from an Android or Windows device, follow these step-by-step instructions before activating the new device.

Caution Caution:

  • The steps below don't work for 3G iPads (iPad and iPad 2); for these models, follow these activation instructions.
  • Accounts (e.g., Gmail, email, etc.) can be set up after activating the device (see Related Topics).
  • To prevent issues with activating or establishing a data connection:
    • if there is a current device connected to the Verizon network on this mobile number, verify that the old device is powered off prior to activating the new device.
    • If completing on-device activation using Wi-Fi, an active network must be available. If Wi-Fi network is using a firewall, activations may fail.

Note Notes:

  • For Prepaid accounts, activate your iPad online. For more info on Prepaid plans and service, view our Prepaid FAQs.
  • Verify the device has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.

Note Notes:

  • If activating on-device using a connection to the Verizon cellular network, the iPad must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or LTE area.
  1. Press the Power button (located on the top-right edge) to power the iPad on.
  2. Press the Home button.
  3. Tap the language then tap the country or region.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi network, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    Note If activating via the OTA method, tap Use Cellular Connection.
  5. If prompted with 'Activation Lock,' enter your Apple ID and password.
  6. Tap a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  7. Tap Continue to set up Touch ID.
    Note If your device is not equipped with the Touch ID feature, tap Use Code to set up a passcode.
  8. From the Apps & Data screen, tap an option:
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
      Note If prompted, sign in with iCloud email and password.
    • Restore from iTunes Backup
    • Set Up as New iPad
    • Move Data from Android
  9. Enter your Apple ID and password then tap Next.
    Note If you have an Apple ID already in use on another device, a verification code is sent to that device; you must enter this code to proceed with activation.If you do not have an Apple ID, refer to Creating An Apple ID.
  10. If prompted to enter a verification code sent to another Apple device, enter the code received.

  11. From the 'Terms and Conditions' screen, tap Agree.
  12. Tap Agree to confirm.
    Note If your device is capable of using Apple Pay, you will be prompted to set up.

  13. From the 'Siri' screen, tap one of the following options:
    • Continue
    • Don't use Siri
  14. From the 'iPad Analytics' page, tap Continue.
  15. From the 'App Analytics' page, tap one of the following options:
    • Share with App Developers
    • Don't Share
  16. Tap Get Started.
  17. Confirm the status bar at the top of the screen changes from 'No Service' to 'Verizon'.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes.

Quick Start (Requires an existing iPhone or iPad running iOS11)

  1. Press the Power button (top-right edge) to power the iPad on then press the Home button.
  2. Tap the language then tap the country or region.
  3. Place the other iPhone or iPad near the new iPad then follow the on-screen prompts on that device.
  4. Tap Continue to set up Touch ID.
    Note If your device is not equipped with the Touch ID feature, tap Use Code to set up a passcode.
  5. From the Restore Your Apps & Data screen, tap an option:
    • Continue (Restores most recent backup as listed)
    • Choose Other Backup or Don't Restore
      • From the Apps & Data screen, tap an option:
        • Restore from iCloud Backup
          Note If prompted, sign in with iCloud email and password.
        • Restore from iTunes Backup
        • Set Up as New iPad
        • Move Data from Android
  6. From the 'Terms and Conditions' screen, tap Agree.
  7. Tap Agree to confirm.
    Note If your device is capable of using Apple Pay, you're prompted to set it up.

  8. Tap a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  9. From the 'Siri' screen, tap one of the following options:
    • Continue
    • Set Up Later in Settings
  10. From the 'iPad Analytics' page, tap one of the following options:.
    • Share with Apple
    • Don't Share
  11. From the 'App Analytics' page, tap one of the following options:
    • Share with App Developers
    • Don't Share
  12. From the True Tone Display screen, tap Continue.
  13. Tap Sign In.
  14. Tap Get Started.
  15. Confirm the status bar at the top of the screen changes from 'No Service' to 'Verizon'.

iTunes Activation Method

Note Requirements:

Caution During the activation process specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes.

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. If prompted with an available software update, it's recommended to download and update.
  4. Connect the iPad to the computer via USB cable.
  5. From the computer, follow any additional iTunes onscreen prompts.
  6. Press the Power button (top right edge) to power iPad on.
  7. Slide the unlock switch right to unlock the device.
  8. Select the language then select the country or region.
  9. Select a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  10. Select a Set Up option:
    • Set Up as New iPad
    • Restore from iCloud Backup
    • Restore from iTunes Backup.
  11. Tap Skip This Step.
  12. If prompted, tap Skip, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  13. If prompted, tap Agree.
  14. If prompted tap Don't Use iCloud
  15. If prompted, tap Don't Use Find My iPad.
  16. If prompted, deselect any numbers or email addresses
    Note Numbers and email addressed are selected when a check mark is present.
  17. Select a Siri option:
    • Use Siri
    • Don't Use Siri
  18. If prompted, enter a 4-digit passcode, select Use Code then re-enter passcode.
  19. Select a Diagnostics & Usage option:
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  20. Tap Get Started.
    Note If presented with 'Can Siri help you?', tap Dismiss.
  21. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from 'No Service' to 'Verizon'.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes.
  22. From iTunes, click the Eject button to the right of the device name. iPad can then be safely disconnected from the computer.
    Note For iTunes version 11 or higher, select the Eject button to the right of the iPad button in the upper right.
