Apple® iPhone® 4s - Activate / Set Up Device

If you need to transfer contacts and media from one device to another, follow these step-by-step instructions before activating the new device.

Caution To avoid potential issues, review the following:

  • Verify that Find My iPhone is off then power off the old device prior to activating the new device.
  • If activation is performed with an incorrect Apple ID or different mobile number, erase all content and settings then sign in to iTunes with the correct Apple ID while tethered to the computer.
  • If using the Wi-Fi method and a firewall is set up on the computer/Wi-Fi network preventing access to port 443, activation fails.
  • Accounts (e.g., Gmail, email, etc.) should be set up after activating the device (see Related Topics).

Note Notes:

  • If activating over Wi-Fi, an active Wi-Fi network must be available.
  • If activating OTA, device must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or LTE area.
  • Ensure the device has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.

On-Device Activation (via a Wi-Fi / Cellular Network Connection)

  1. Press the Power button (top-right edge) to power the iPhone on.
  2. Slide the unlock switch right to unlock the device.
  3. Tap the language then tap the country or region.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi network, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    Note If activating via the OTA method, tap Use Cellular Connection.
  5. Tap a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  6. Enter a passcode then, if prompted, tap Use Code.
  7. Re-enter the passcode.
  8. From the Apps & Data screen, tap an option:
  9. Enter your Apple ID and Password then tap Next.
    Note If you have an Apple ID already in use on another device, a verification code is sent to that device; you must enter this code to proceed with activation.
    Note If you don't have an Apple ID, refer to Create An Apple ID.
  10. From the Terms and Conditions screen, tap Agree then tap Agree to confirm.
  11. From the iCloud Keychain screen, tap Continue.
  12. If applicable, tap one of the following options:
    • Use passcode
    • Create different passcode
  13. Enter a phone number then tap Next (upper-right).
  14. Tap one of the following options:
    • Use Siri
    • Don't use Siri
  15. Tap Continue.
  16. From the App Analytics page, tap one of the following options:
    • Share with App Developers
    • Don't Share
  17. Tap Get Started.
  18. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes. If activation fails, try the iTunes method.

Caution During the activation process specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes.

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. Connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
    Note Allow time for iTunes to detect and activate your iPhone; successful activation indicated when iTunes shows 'Set up as New' or 'Restore from Backup' screen.
  4. Follow onscreen prompts to complete setup.
