Set Up Device - Apple® iPhone® 5

If you need to transfer contacts and media from one device to another, follow these step-by-step instructions before activating the new device.

Caution Caution:

  • Accounts (e.g., Gmail, email, etc.) should be set up after activating the device (see Related Topics).
  • If activation is performed with an incorrect Apple ID or different phone number, erase all content and settings then sign in to iTunes with the correct Apple ID while tethered to the computer.
  • Verify that Find My iPhone is off then power off the old device prior to activating the new device.
  • If using the Wi-Fi method and a firewall is set up on the computer/Wi-Fi network preventing access to port 443, activation fails.

Note Notes:

  • The activation process takes 2-3 minutes.
  • If activating over Wi-Fi, an active Wi-Fi network must be available.
  • If activating OTA, device must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or LTE area.
  • Verify the device has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.

Wi-Fi/OTA Activation Method

  1. Press the Power button (located on the top-right edge) to power the iPhone on.
    Note If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated when purchased, refer to the activation instructions in Power On Activation - iPhone.
  2. Press the Home button to unlock your iPhone.
  3. Tap the screen to choose language then tap the country or region.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi network, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    Note If activating via the OTA method, tap Use Cellular Connection.
  5. Tap a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  6. When prompted to set up Touch ID, tap the Home button.
  7. Place your thumb or finger on the Home button repeatedly as directed.
  8. If prompted to change your grip, tap Continue.
  9. Place your thumb or finger on the Home button repeatedly as directed then tap Continue.
  10. Enter a 6-digit passcode, re-enter passcode, then tap Next.
  11. Tap a set up option:
  12. Enter your Apple ID and password then tap Next.
    Note If you have an Apple ID already in use on another device, a verification code is sent to that device; you must enter this code to proceed with activation.
    Note If you don't have an Apple ID, refer to Create An Apple ID.
  13. To continue, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  14. If prompted, tap Agree to confirm.
  15. Tap Next.
  16. From the Apple Pay screen, tap Set Up Later in Wallet.
  17. From the iCloud Keychain screen, choose one of the following
    • Approve from Other Device
    • Use iCloud Security Code
    • Don't Restore Passwords
  18. Tap Next from the Apple Pay screen.
  19. Tap Set Up Later in Wallet.
  20. Tap a Siri option:
    • Turn On Siri
    • Turn On Siri Later
  21. Tap a Diagnostics option:
    • Send to Apple
    • Don't Send
  22. Tap an App Analytics option:
    • Share with App Developers
    • Don't Share
  23. Tap the "Standard" or "Zoomed" view then tap Next.
  24. Tap Get Started.
    Note If presented with Can Siri help you? tap Dismiss.
  25. Confirm the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes.

iTunes Activation Method

Note Requirements:

Caution During the activation process specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes.

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
    Note If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated when purchased, refer to the activation instructions in Power On Activation - iPhone.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. If prompted with an available software update, it's recommended to download and update.
  4. Connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
  5. Press the Power button (located on the top-right edge) to power iPhone on.
  6. Press the Home button to unlock the device.
  7. Tap the language then tap the country or region.
  8. Tap a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  9. Tap a set up option:
  10. Tap Skip This Step.
  11. If prompted, tap Skip, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  12. If prompted, tap Agree.
  13. If prompted, deselect any numbers or email addresses
    Note Numbers and email addressed are selected when a check mark is present.
  14. Tap a Siri option:
    • Use Siri
    • Don't Use Siri
  15. If prompted, enter a passcode, tap Use Code then re-enter passcode.
  16. Tap a Diagnostics & Usage option:
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  17. Tap Get Started.
    Note If presented with "Can Siri help you?" tap Dismiss.
  18. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from "No Service" to "Verizon".
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes.
  19. From iTunes on the computer, click the Eject button to the right of the device name. iPhone can then be safely disconnected from the computer.
    Note For iTunes version 11 or higher, click the Eject button to the right of the iPhone button in the upper-right.
