Software updates can improve device stability and provide a variety of additional benefits, including user experience improvements, bug fixes and the latest security patches. This page has links to the most current software updates for all supported Verizon Wireless devices.
Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a software update for your device. This software update has been tested to optimize device performance, resolve known issues and apply the latest security patches.
Before you download:
The current software update gives you the most up to date Android® security patch on your device.
Next steps and additional links:
Please allow additional time for the apps on your device to continue to download after the software update.
If you received a notification message for this software update:
You've successfully updated your phone.
If you didn't receive a notification message for this software update, follow the steps below to manually update your phone:
You've successfully updated your phone.
Software Upgrade Assistant Tool
If you don't have a strong connection to Wi-Fi or the Verizon Wireless network, you may not be able to perform a software update over the air. Instead, you can connect your device to a computer with Internet access. Connect your device to your computer using your USB cable, then download the Software Upgrade / Repair Assistant tool to your computer, which will check for software updates and initiate the software update process.
Android 5.1 Lollipop is one of the most significant OS updates in recent Android history. It improves your experience in many areas, including visual style and how you interact with your device.
After installing the software update, some of the changes you'll notice include:
A colorful new look and feel to your device with fluid animations and new app and system themes, colors and widgets.
Notifications & Priorities
In order to alert you to the most timely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
New Interruptions & Downtime Settings
You can customize when you receive interruptions, choosing to allow all, none or only priority interruptions. You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (such as reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify. The Downtime setting allows only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify (e.g., allowing only priority interruptions on the weekend).
Recent Apps (Multitasking)
The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) provides a consistent way to switch between tasks, apps and separate activities within those apps. For instance, each open tab in Chrome™ will also appear here along with recent apps, and both your Gmail™ Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.
While your phone's display is off, Ambient Display shows notifications without turning on the full display, similar to ones shown on the lock screen. You can turn this feature on in the Display menu in Settings. Note: Using this feature will increase your device's power consumption.
Motorola Assist and Downtime
Motorola Assist integrates the new Downtime settings to control when you don't want to be disturbed. You can also use Motorola Assist and the new Interruptions settings to customize exceptions, such as letting only people who are on your starred contacts list get through.
Lollipop includes a flashlight as part of Quick Settings - swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it.
Pin a view/app
Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can "pin" a game and your child won't be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for 2 key functions: how much time is left while using the phone, and how much time before the device is fully charged. You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
Smarter Internet Connections
With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection.
Android Runtime is a new feature that helps optimize app performance. After updating to Lollipop, your apps will undergo a one-time optimization process.
Android Lollipop adds native support for allowing trusted devices to keep your phone unlocked (such as your Moto 360, a Bluetooth® car kit or headset, etc.). Smart Lock replaces the prior trusted device capability in your Motorola phone. Note that you’ll need to add your trusted devices back after the transition to Lollipop in the Security settings menu under Smart Lock.
