Turn Battery Optimization On / Off - Android™ 6.x and higher (Samsung)

Note Notes:

  • Battery optimization features improve battery life by placing apps in Doze mode or App Standby.
  • Optimization is turned on by default and can turned off / back on as preferred.
  • Apps with optimization turned off may continue to impact battery life.

Android 6.x - 8.x

  1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps > Settings > Battery.
    Note If not available, swipe up or down to access apps screen then navigate: Settings > Device maintenance > Battery.
  2. Tap MORE or the Menu icon Menu icon (upper-right) then tap Optimize battery usage.
    Note If not available, navigate: Battery Usage (next to Estimated battery life) > Menu icon Menu icon > Optimize battery usage.
  3. Tap the Dropdown menu Dropdown icon (at the top) then tap All apps.
  4. If preferred, tap the app switch(es) to turn on or off.
    Note Apps or services unable to be optimized appear grayed out.

Android 9.x

  1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps > Settings > Battery.
    Note If not available, swipe up or down to access apps screen then navigate: Settings > Device Care > Battery.
  2. Tap Battery Usage (next to Estimated battery life).
  3. From the 'Battery usage since last full charge' section, tap one one the options (Screen, Call standby, etc.).
    Note Options will vary based on device usage.
  4. Tap Optimize battery usage.
  5. Tap the Dropdown menu Dropdown icon (at the top) then tap All.
  6. If preferred, tap the app switch(es) to turn on or off.
    Note Apps or services unable to be optimized appear grayed out.

Battery Optimization Features

  • Doze Mode:
    • starts when the device is stationary and not charging and the screen is off.
    • prevents the device from syncing and accessing the network, Wi-Fi from scanning, etc.
    • allows SMS, MMS, phone calls, alarms, and Amber Alerts to still function.
    • stops when the device is moved, the screen turns on, or the alarm clock sounds/vibrates.
    • isn't affected by notifications.
  • App Standby:
    • conserves battery power by preventing apps from accessing networks, syncing, etc. when not in use or not generating any user-visible notification.
    • stops when the device becomes active or is plugged in.
