Apple® iPad® - Wi-Fi Sync with iTunes®

Wi-Fi sync allows wireless syncing between an iPad and the computer to back up and sync to iTunes.

Note Notes:

  • Verify the following:
    • The latest iTunes version is installed on the computer.
    • Wi-Fi is turned on.
  • Ensure that Wi-Fi is turned on.

  1. Ensure the iPad is powered on.
  2. Connect the iPad to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
    Note When tethered, iTunes opens automatically on the computer.
  3. In iTunes, select the iPad under Devices in the left column.
    Note For iTunes version 11 or higher, click the iPad button along the top.
    Note If prompted, update to the latest version of iTunes.
  4. From (Summary) > Options, ensure Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi is checked.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. To sync via iPhone, tap Settings from the Home screen.
    Note Alternatively, to sync from a computer via iTunes, do one of the following:
    • From the iTunes menu, click File then click Sync.
      Note For iTunes version 12, click File > Devices > Sync.
    • From iTunes, click Sync (located in the lower-right).




From iPad

  1. Tap General.
  2. Tap iTunes Wi-Fi Sync.
  3. Tap Sync Now.
    Note Allow several minutes for the device to begin the sync process.
    Note Once sync begins, a revolving arrow appears in the menu bar (located in the upper-left corner).
    Note A Syncing Media status bar appears on-screen.
    Note Once sync completes, the time of the last sync displays.


Note After initially following the steps above, the iOS device syncs automatically when the following conditions are true:

  • The device is charging.
  • iTunes is open on the computer.
  • The device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
