Minimum Requirements and Device Capabilities - Verizon Wireless Network Extender (EvDO)

  • Verizon Wireless post pay account.
    Note Enrollment in My Verizon is required to manage priority list.
  • Network Extender must reside in a location where Verizon Wireless is licensed to transmit a signal (owns a spectrum license).
  • An always-on broadband Internet connection (e.g. FiOS, DSL, Cable) with a minimum speed of 3.1 Mbps.
    Note Satellite or wireless broadband service are not supported.
  • An available Ethernet (WAN) port on a router or modem 1 that has the following capabilities:
    Note Refer to the router or modem product documentation to confirm compatibility.
    • VPN (Virtual Private Networking)
    • DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
    • IPSEC (Internet Protocol Security)
    • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

Users may notice a small decrease in available Internet bandwidth when using the Network Extender. The table below outlines bandwidth requirements based on the number of active callers:

Device capabilities:

The Network Extender supports CDMA voice, 1X and 3G EVDO data. These services include:

  • Voice services (up to 6 channels)
    Note A seventh call channel is reserved to support emergency (E911) calls only.
  • Data services (up to four 3G or up to six 1X channels)
    Note Data usage on a Network Extender is billed based upon data plan. If available, utilize Wi-Fi or other data connection to avoid possible data charges.
  • Text, Picture, and Video Messaging
  • Web Browsing/Mobile Broadband
  • Smartphone/BlackBerry email and data
  • Verizon Wireless branded 4G Mobile Broadband devices


1 Routers may require special configuration (e.g. Firewall, Quality of Service (QoS) settings) to ensure the best possible call quality. Refer to router equipment manufacturer for assistance with these settings. Examples of router setup are provided here; however, Verizon Wireless doesn't support 3rd party routers.  Furthermore, variations in Internet connectivity from the Internet Service Provider (ISP) may affect QoS as well. Refer to the router manufacturer or ISP for assistance.
