Apple® iPhone® 4 - Activate / Set Up Device

If you need to transfer contacts and media from one device to another, follow these step-by-step instructions before activating the new device.

Caution Caution:

  • To prevent issues with activating or establishing a data connection, verify that the old device is powered off prior to activating the new device
  • If activation is performed with an incorrect Apple ID or different mobile number, erase all content and settings then sign in to iTunes with the correct Apple ID while tethered to the computer.
  • If using the Wi-Fi method and a firewall is set up on the computer/Wi-Fi network preventing access to port 443, activation fails.
  • A device with iOS 6 is unable to activate over a cellular connection, only via Wi-Fi or iTunes.
  • If you're unable to place/receive a call after following the steps below, you may need to dial *228 to complete activation.
  • Accounts (e.g., Gmail, email, etc.) should be set up after activating the device (see Related Topics).

Note Notes:

  • If activating over Wi-Fi, an active Wi-Fi network must be available.
  • If activating OTA, device must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or LTE area.
  • Verify the device has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.

  1. Press the Power button (top-right edge) to power the iPhone on.
  2. Slide the unlock switch right to unlock the device.
  3. Select the language then select the country or region.
  4. Select the Wi-Fi network, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    Note If activating via the OTA method, tap Use Cellular Connection.
  5. Select a location services option:
    • Enable Location Services
    • Disable Location Services
  6. Select a Set Up option:
  7. Tap Skip This Step.
  8. If prompted, tap Skip, review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  9. Enter a 4-digit passcode then, if prompted, tap Use Code.
  10. Re-enter the 4-digit passcode then select a Diagnostics & Usage option:
    • Automatically Send
    • Don't Send
  11. Tap Get Started.
  12. Confirm that the status bar at the top of the screen changes from 'No Service' to 'Verizon'.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes. If activation fails, try the iTunes method.


iTunes Activation Method

Note Requirements:

Caution During the activation process specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes.

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. Connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
    Note Allow time for iTunes to detect and activate your iPhone; successful activation indicated when iTunes shows 'Set up as New' or 'Restore from Backup' screen.
  4. Follow onscreen prompts to complete set up.
