Apple® iPad® - Cellular Data Activation

Caution The iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 come with a preinstalled Apple SIM card, if purchased directly from Apple and certain retailers.

  • The Apple SIM card must be removed and replaced with a Verizon Wireless 4G LTE SIM card to be used on the Verizon Wireless network.
  • SIM cards can be obtained from any Verizon Wireless retail store or at the online store.

Pre-Paid Cellular Data Activation

Note Ensure a SIM card is inserted before performing the steps below. Refer to Insert the SIM Card for further assistance.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings Settings icon.
  2. Tap Cellular Data.
    Note Cellular Data must be turned ON in order to continue.
  3. Tap View Account.
  4. Tap Set Up New Account then tap Continue.
  5. Enter the user info:
    • First name
    • Last name
    • Telephone
  6. Enter the Log in info:
    • Email
    • Verify email (re-enter)
    • Password
    • Verify password (re-enter)
  7. Select the monthly Prepaid data plan.
  8. Select the credit card type (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or Amex).
  9. Enter the payment and billing info then tap Continue:
    • Credit card number
    • Name on credit card
    • Expiration date
    • Security code
    • Billing address
  10. Review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  11. Verify the payment summary information then tap Submit.
  12. When the "congratulations" screen displays, tap OK.
  13. If prompted tap OK.
    Note A confirmation email is sent to the given email address once account creation is successful.
    Note It may take several minutes to complete the activation and receive the email notification.

Standard Monthly Cellular Data Activation with an Existing Monthly Data Plan

Note Notes:

  • The account must have a monthly Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband data plan.
  • For Pre-paid Cellular Data refer to Pre-Paid Cellular Data Activation for assistance.
  • Ensure a SIM card is inserted before performing the steps below.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Safari.
  2. Tap OK when prompted with "Press OK to activate data plan...".
    Note It may take several minutes to complete the activation.
    Note If prompted with 'Could not activate Cellular data' tap OK.
    Note If prompted with 'You have not signed up for a data plan. Would you like to setup a new account?' tap Now.
  3. Tap OK when prompted with 'Cellular data plan is updated'.
    Note The iPad power cycles after the update.

Self-Activate a New Standard Monthly Data Plan on an Existing Account

Note Notes:

  • Ensure a SIM card is inserted before performing the steps below.
  • Only Account Owners and Account Managers are allowed to add lines to an existing account.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings Settings icon.
  2. Tap Cellular Data.
  3. Tap View Account.
  4. Tap Add to Existing Verizon Wireless Account then tap Next.
    Note Selected when a check mark is present.
    Note Selecting will populate the ability to enter My Verizon user name and password.
  5. Enter the My Verizon user name and password then tap Next.
    Note If a My Verizon account hasn't been set up, or the password is forgotten, navigate to the My Verizon Registration page from a computer and follow the instructions.
    Note If the account was an existing Prepaid account and the My Verizon username and password is entered, there's a prompt to continue with a Prepaid activation. A new device cannot be added to the existing account.

  1. Verify the account info:
    • billing info
    • account #
    • current plan
  2. Choose the desired recurring domestic plan option then tap Next.
  3. Review the Terms of Service then tap Agree.
  4. Review the Billing Summary then tap Submit.
  5. Tap OK.
    Note The activation process may take up to 15 minutes.
  6. When prompted with "the Cellular Data Plan has been updated" tap OK.
