Recover Microsoft® Account Sign-in Information

Note A Microsoft account (Formerly Windows Live ID) is the email address used along with a password to sign in to any Microsoft program or service such as Outlook.com, Hotmail, Messenger, OneDrive, Xbox LIVE, or Office Live. Some examples of Microsoft accounts end in @live, @hotmail, @outlook.com.

Recover Microsoft Account Password

  1. From a computer, launch an Internet browser.
  2. For assistance recovering the Microsoft account password, refer to https://account.live.com/password/reset then follow the step-by-step instructions.

 

Recover Microsoft Account Email Address

Note Notes:
  • Microsoft removes accounts that have not had any logins for more than one year. If a Microsoft account has not been used for more than a year, a new account will need to be created.
  • If any Microsoft services are currently being used, review the following information for suggestions on how to discover the Microsoft account. If no Microsoft services are being used, then Create a New Microsoft Account.

 

  1. Review the following suggestions to assist in recovery of a forgotten Microsoft account.
    • If a Microsoft account is used to send email, ask an email recipient for the delivery email address (from the email sent using the Microsoft account).
    • If the Microsoft account was used with Windows Live Messenger, launch Messenger to see if it automatically logs in with the user account credentials. If it does, log out of Messenger and the resulting login screen will display the Microsoft account.
    • If another computer has been used in the past to log into the Microsoft account, navigate to https://login.live.com on that computer. Click into the account name box and push the down arrow key on the keyboard. This may display a list of previous logins and reveal the user Microsoft account name.
    • On Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, verify if the Microsoft account is saved in the Windows credential vault.
      Note Navigate to Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage Windows credentials. This credential vault can store user names and passwords.
      Note The Microsoft account may be listed in the credential vault if it was previously saved.
    • If an Xbox is used, navigate to the Xbox Support Website for assistance in using the Xbox gamer tag to retrieve the Microsoft account.
    • If any other paid services associated with the Microsoft account is used, contact that service's support for assistance in identifying the Microsoft account.
  2. If none of these steps were successful, then Create a New Microsoft Account.
