Apple Watch® - Factory Data Reset (Powered On)

A factory data reset may help with a blank or frozen screen, apps crashing or freezing, keypad/touchscreen problems, can't hear, device making noises, can't make or receive calls, and device won't sync.

Caution Perform a factory data reset only if absolutely necessary as it removes all data including:

  • System and app data
  • Unlock passcode
  • App settings
  • Downloaded apps
  • Media (Music, pictures and videos, etc.)

From the Watch

  1. Press the Digital Crown on your watch to see your apps.

  2. Tap the Settings icon Settings icon.
    Note Swipe the screen up if you don't see the Settings icon.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  6. Tap one of the following (options may vary based on model):
    Note Erasing does not remove Activation Lock; to disable, unpair your Watch from your iPhone to begin the reset process.
    • Erase All & Keep Plan
      Note Choose this if you have an Apple Watch Series 3 as it must remain paired with an iPhone.
    • Erase All
    • Cancel
    Erase all content


From the Watch App on Your Paired iPhone

Note Ensure your Apple Watch and the paired iPhone are kept close together while completing the steps below.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Watch app icon Watch app icon.
  2. Tap the My Watch tab.

  3. Tap General then tap Reset.
  4. Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
  5. To confirm, tap Erase All Content and Settings again from the pop-up.
