First time setup and activation – out of the box experience - Moto Z Play Droid Edition

Note This device comes with the SIM card already inserted.

Caution Are you upgrading from an existing Verizon Wireless device? Yes or No.

  1. If powered off, press and hold the Power button until the moto logo appears then release.
    Power button
  2. From the Welcome screen, select the appropriate language then tap NEXT.
    Note Allow several seconds for activation to complete.
  3. If presented with the Verify your account screen, do the following:
    1. Enter the last 4 digits of the Account Owner's Social Security Number or Billing Password then follow the onscreen prompts.
    2. Turn off your old phone to ensure the activation process completes.
  4. From the Phone Activation screen, tap NEXT.
  5. From the Got another device screen, follow the onscreen instructions to transfer data from a previous device or tap No thanks > NEXT.
  6. From the Add your account (Google) screen, do one of the following:
    • To add an existing account, click here.
    • To create a new Google account, click here.
  7. From the Protect your phone screen, select one of the following then tap NEXT:
  8. From the Verizon Cloud screen, tap NEXT to begin setup.
  9. From the Email Accounts screen, add your email account(s). Click here to see how.
  10. From the Summary screen, tap DONE (located in the lower-right).
  11. Review the Moto Privacy settings then tap ACCEPT.
    Note To review the Moto Privacy Policy:
    1. Tap Privacy settings
    2. Tap View Motorola Privacy Policy (located at the bottom)
    3. When finished, tap DONE.
    4. Tap the left arrow icon < (located in the lower-left).
  12. Congratulations! Your device set up is complete!

Verizon Cloud

  1. Tap the items you would like Verizon Cloud to back up then tap NEXT.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
  2. Choose how you would like Verizon Cloud to back up content:
    • Wi-Fi Only
    • Both Wi-Fi and Mobile Networks
  3. Tap DONE WITH CLOUD.

Email Setup

  1. Tap the account type.
  2. Enter the Email address then tap Next Next icon (located in the lower-right).
    Note Depending upon the email account type, the available options may vary
    Note If Microsoft Exchange Active Sync was selected, then complete these steps
  3. Enter the password then tap Next.
  4. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., Username, Password, Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
    Note If not presented, skip to step 6.
  5. Enter the appropriate info (e.g., SMTP server, Port, Security type, etc.) then tap Next.
  6. Configure account options (e.g., Sync frequency, Inbox download size, etc.) as desired then tap Next.
    Note Depending upon the email account type, the available options may vary
  7. Enter an account name (optional) then tap Next.
    Note If presented, ensure a name is entered for outgoing messages
  8. Tap DONE WITH EMAIL.

Go back to continue with step 10 of first time setup

Corporate Email Setup (Exchange Active Sync)

  1. Enter your corporate email address then tap Next Next icon (located in the lower-right).
  2. Enter your password then tap the Next.
    Note If presented with an Incoming server settings screen, refer to manual set up.
  3. If presented with a Remote security administration prompt, tap OK to confirm.
  4. Configure the account options (e.g., Sync frequency, etc.) as necessary then tap Next.
  5. If presented with an Activate device administrator screen, tap Activate.
    Note Follow the on-screen steps to complete the applied security policy (e.g., Set up password, Device encryption).
    Note Device encryption can exceed 60 minutes. If prompted, connect your phone to a charging device to begin (battery charge must be at 80% or greater).
  6. If desired, enter an account name then tap Next.

Manually Setup Corporate Email Setup (Exchange Active Sync)

Note Contact your Exchange/IT administrator for assistance with server info and credentials.

  1. Ensure that the appropriate info is entered into the following fields then tap Next:
    • DOMAIN\USERNAME
    • PASSWORD
    • SERVER
    • PORT
    • SECURITY TYPE
  2. If presented with a Remote security administration prompt, tap OK to confirm.
  3. Configure the account options (e.g., Sync frequency, etc.) as necessary then tap Next.
  4. If presented with an Activate device administrator screen, tap Activate.
    Note Follow the on-screen steps to complete the applied security policy (e.g., Set up password, Device encryption).
    Note Device encryption can exceed 60 minutes. If prompted, connect your phone to a charging device to begin (battery charge must be at 80% or greater).
  5. If desired, enter an account name then tap Next.

Go back to continue with step 10 of first time setup

Add an Existing Google Account

  1. Enter the email address then tap NEXT (located in the lower right).
  2. Enter the email password then tap NEXT.
  3. Review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy then tap ACCEPT (located in the lower-right) to continue.
  4. From the Google services screen, select any of the following to enable or disable then tap NEXT (may require scrolling to the bottom).
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
    • Automatically back up device data
    • Help apps find your location
    • Improve location accuracy
    • Help improve your Android experience
  5. From the Set up payment info screen, select No thanks then tap CONTINUE.
    Note Payment info can be completed later by navigating Apps > Play Store from a Home screen, tap a paid app, tap Continue then select a payment method.
  6. If presented to restore apps and data from a previous device, tap Don't restore.

Go back to continue with step 7 of first time setup

Create a New Google Account

  1. Enter the appropriate name into the following fields then tap NEXT (located in the lower right).
    • First name
    • Last name
  2. Locate the Username field and enter the desired username then tap NEXT.
  3. Enter then re-enter the preferred password then tap NEXT.
    Note The password must be at least 8 characters.
  4. From the Rescue info screen, ensure the correct phone number is listed then tap NEXT.
  5. From the Confirm phone number screen, ensure the correct phone number is listed then tap Send It.
  6. Tap AGREE to accept the terms and conditions.
  7. Tap NEXT.
  8. From the Google services screen, tap Keep me up to date... to enable or disable then tap NEXT.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
  9. From the Set up payment info screen, select Remind me later then tap NEXT.
    Note Payment info can be completed later by navigating Apps > Play Store from a Home screen, tap a paid app, tap Continue then select a payment method.
  10. From the Sync your account screen, tap the appropriate sync settings (e.g., Sync Contacts, etc.) to enable or disable then tap NEXT.
    Note Enabled when a check mark is present.

Go back to continue with step 7 of first time setup

◦Set up fingerprint

Note A fingerprint is utilized to unlock the device.

  1. Review the info then tap NEXT (located in the lower-right).
  2. Choose the desired backup screen lock method:
  3. Locate the fingerprint sensor below the display then tap NEXT (located in the lower-right).
  4. Review the info then tap NEXT.
  5. Place your finger on the sensor until it vibrates then lift.
    Note Repeat this step as necessary until the process is complete.
    Note For greater accuracy, finger placement should vary slightly each time.
  6. Tap NEXT.
  7. Tap NEXT.

Set Up Pattern Lock

Note An unlock pattern is created to access the device.

  1. Tap Pattern.
  2. Draw an unlock pattern (connecting at least 4 dots) then tap CONTINUE.
  3. Draw the same pattern again then tap CONFIRM.
  4. If presented, select an option then tap DONE (located in the lower-right).
    • Show all notification content
    • Hide sensitive notification content
    • Don't show notifications at all

Go back to step 3 of fingerprint setup or Go back to step 8 of first time setup

Set Up PIN Lock

Note A PIN number is created to access the device.

  1. Tap PIN.
  2. Enter a numeric PIN (4 to 16 digits) then tap CONTINUE.
  3. Re-enter the numeric PIN then tap OK.
  4. If presented, select an option then tap DONE (located in the lower-right).
    • Show all notification content
    • Hide sensitive notification content
    • Don't show notifications at all

Go back to step 3 of fingerprint setup or Go back to step 8 of first time setup

Set Up Password Lock

Note A password is created to access the device.

  1. Tap Password.
  2. Enter a password (4 to 16 characters) then tap CONTINUE.
  3. Re-enter the password then tap OK.
  4. If presented, select an option then tap DONE (located in the lower-right).
    • Show all notification content
    • Hide sensitive notification content
    • Don't show notifications at all

Go back to step 3 of fingerprint setup or Go back to step 8 of first time setup

Existing Customers (Only Applies if Upgrading from a Verizon Device)

Note If you're upgrading from iPhone®, you need to turn off iMessage before activating your new phone.

  1. Save Contacts and Content from your Original phone using the Transfer Wizard.
  2. Start the Activation process by calling (877) 807-4646 from any phone other than your new phone and follow the prompts.
    Note Have your Customer Receipt available because you are asked to confirm purchase information
  3. Turn off your Original phone.

Turn off iMessage®

  1. On your iPhone go to Settings.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. If the indicator next to the iMessage switch is green, tap or slide the switch to turn it off.
    Note When the feature is turned off, the switch is all white
