Set Up Device - Apple® iPhone® XS / XS Max

If you need to transfer contacts and media from one device to another, follow these step-by-step instructions before activating the new device.

Caution If replacing a device, prevent activation or connection issues by making sure your old device is turned off.

Note Notes:

  • Verify the device has a charge. If the battery is drained, use the included AC adapter to charge for approximately 15 minutes.
  • Accounts (e.g., email, Cloud, etc.) can be set up after activating the device (see Related Topics).

On-device Activation
iTunes

 

On-device Activation (via a Wi-Fi / Cellular network connection)

Note Notes:

  • If activating over Wi-Fi, an active Wi-Fi network must be available; activations may fail if a firewall is being used.
  • If activating using a cellular connection, device must be in a Verizon Wireless 3G or 4G LTE area.
  • If on-device activation is unsuccessful, you can connect your iPhone to a computer and use iTunes to activate.

 

  1. Press the Power button (top-right edge) to power the iPhone on.
    Note If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated when purchased, refer to the activation instructions in Power On Activation - iPhone.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to choose language then tap the country or region.
  3. Tap Set Up Manually.
    Note If you have a previous device on iOS 11, follow the directions to use Quick Start to complete auto sign-in.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi network, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    Note If activating over the Verizon network, tap Use Cellular Connection.
  5. From the Data & Privacy section, tap Continue.
  6. When prompted to set up Face ID, tap Continue then tap the Get Started button.
  7. From the Face ID screen, follow the onscreen prompts to complete setup or tap Set Up Later in Settings.
  8. Enter a 6-digit passcode, re-enter passcode.
  9. Tap a set up option:
  10. Enter your Apple ID and password then tap Next.
    Note If you have an Apple ID already in use on another device, a verification code is sent to that device; you must enter this code to proceed with activation.
    Note If you don't have an Apple ID or have forgotten your sign-in info, refer to one of the following:
  11. Review the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree.
  12. From the Express Settings, tap 'Continue' or 'Customize Settings'.
  13. From the Keep Your iPhone Up to Date, tap 'Continue' or 'Install Updates Manually'.
  14. From the iMessages & FaceTime, tap 'Continue' or 'Not Now'.
  15. From the Siri screen, tap 'Continue' or 'Set up Later in Settings'.
  16. From the Screen Time screen, tap 'Continue' or ' Set Up Later in Settings'.
  17. Tap whether to share analytics with app developers by tapping 'Share with App Developers' or 'Don't Share'.
  18. From the True Tone Display screen, tap Continue.
    Note True Tone adjusts your display based on the ambient light for consistency and for softer light at night.
  19. From the Go Home screen, tap Continue.
  20. From the Quickly Access Controls, tap Continue
  21. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get started using your iPhone; confirm the status bar at the top of the screen changes from No Service to Verizon.

iTunes Activation Method

Note Refer to iTunes: Get the latest version for additional assistance.

Caution During the activation process, specific update and restore error messages may be received within iTunes.

  1. From the computer, close any open apps.
    Note If this is an upgrade or your phone was not activated when purchased, refer to the activation instructions in Power On Activation - iPhone.
  2. Open the iTunes app on the computer.
  3. Connect the iPhone to the computer via USB cable.
    Note Allow time for iTunes to detect and activate your iPhone; successful activation indicated when iTunes shows 'Set up as New' or 'Restore from Backup' screen.
  4. Follow onscreen prompts to complete setup.
    Note This process may take 2-3 minutes. If the activation fails, view this support info.
