Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams (VMMT) - Customer Notifications

September 2023 - Apple iOS 17 Live Voicemail Feature Impacting VMMT Users with iPhones

Apple is introducing a new feature called Live Voicemail in iOS 17 for Apple phones. Live Voicemail gives users the ability to see real-time transcription as someone leaves voicemail and the opportunity to pick up while the caller is leaving their message.

Impact to Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams service will be immediate upon device upgrade as Live Voicemail is turned ON by default. Verizon recommends turning Live Voicemail OFF upon upgrading to iOS 17 as it will interfere with Verizon's service.

Note: This issue impacts iPhones upgraded to iOS 17 that are provisioned with Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams numbers.

Impacts to Verizon Mobile for Microsoft Teams (VMMT) when Live Voicemail is turned "ON"

    • Local Device: Live Voicemail will likely preempt sending voicemail to MicroftTeams and will store any voicemails locally on the end users' iPhone.
    • Voicemail Storage: Local Voicemail may be available on iCloud backup server if space allows
    • Microsoft Teams Endpoint Voicemail Visibility: Voicemail will not show up on the end users Teams specific endpoints. This includes the Teams applications, Outlook, and any supported IP Phone endpoints.
    • Message Waiting Indicator (MWI): MWI will not operate for any Live Voicemail on end users IP Phone endpoints.
    • Microsoft Teams Endpoint Active Call Impact: Other Teams endpoints will see the Live Voicemail call as an active call and can move it or listen in while the message is being left. The end user will not be aware as they believe they are in a private Voicemail session. This is essentially supporting a barge-in to Voicemail which is new.
    • Split Voice Mail Systems: If the end user's iPhone is OFF or in Airplane mode, the voicemail will go to Microsoft Teams and will be answered and stored only in Microsoft Teams. In this case it will show in the Teams app, Outlook and any connected IP Phone as expected, but will not show on the native mobile phone voicemail.
    • Call Queue: Call Queue rotation will potentially break when a call is made to a device with Live Voicemail.
    • Simultaneous Ring: When a personal simultaneous ring is routed to a device with Live Voicemail it will potentially deposit the caller into the device's Live Voicemail if not answered in time.
    • Early Call Decline: If the VMMT user declines the call at any time it will go directly to Live Voicemail, not the user’s Microsoft Teams Cloud Voicemail.
