PopData FAQs

General Information

  1. What is PopData and how do I get it?

PopData is an all-you-can-stream data connection, wherever network capacity is available. Data usage is measured in 30 and 60-minute sessions, and is billed directly to your account.

    • $2 for 30 minutes
    • $3 for 60 minutes

    You can get PopData:

    • In My Verizon app Data Hub
    • In the My Verizon app in the upper left Navigation menu under "Other Apps & Links"

Session options depend on network availability at the time of your request.

  2. Why is PopData better than public Wi-Fi?

PopData is powered by the Verizon Wireless network, and provides a faster, more secure connection than most public Wi-Fi hotspots. In addition, it's available almost everywhere.

You won't have to wait for Wi-Fi to perform heavy data usage tasks (i.e. watching videos). PopData is an economical way to perform those same tasks without using your plan data, and great for when you're on the go.

  3. Where can I use PopData?

PopData is available almost anywhere Verizon Wireless has 4G LTE coverage. A 4G LTE connection is required to start a PopData session.

  4. Is PopData available for all devices and account types?

    To use PopData, you must:

    • Have a standard monthly account
    • Use Android® smartphones, iPhone and iPad
    • Account must use the My Verizon app

PopData is not currently available for prepaid accounts or businesses with a signed business agreement.

How to Use PopData

  1. Where can I start a PopData session?

You can start a PopData session in the My Verizon app.

In the My Verizon app Feed:

    1. Tap Data Meter
    2. Tap Get More Data
    3. Tap PopData

PopData will be grayed out if a session isn't available at that time.

  2. Do I need Location Based Services to be turned on to use PopData?

Yes. The network needs to know your location to know if a session is available in that area.

  3. Why do I have to decide within 5 minutes to start the 30 or 60-minute data session that I selected?

There's a time limit because availability depends on the amount of network traffic when you select either a 30 or 60-minute session.

Just like buying event tickets, you have a limited amount of time to accept the tickets, or the opportunity to buy the tickets expires.

  4. Why do I need to have push notifications turned on to use PopData?

It's to let you know when your session is over, so you know when you'll be using your plan data again.

  5. How will I know when my PopData session starts and ends?

You'll receive a series of informational notifications on the My Verizon app. We’ll let you know:

    1. When your PopData session starts
    2. What time it will end
    3. When there's 5 minutes left in your PopData session
    4. When it's over
  6. Can I extend a session?

You may see an option to purchase another session at the end of your current one, if one is available.

Billing and Eligibility

  1. Who can purchase a PopData session on my account?

PopData sessions are purchased and used by individual mobile numbers, but are billed to that line's account. To use PopData:

    • You must have the My Verizon app.

    • Your account must be eligible for Bill to account, including all normal checks for eligibility.
See Bill to account eligibility requirements

    • Each user must be authorized to bill purchases to the account. The Account Owner will receive a notification text and email regarding the purchase.

  2. Can I block anyone on my account from using PopData?

Yes. We offer a free service block feature in My Verizon that you can set up for each mobile device on your account. It can limit the device's messaging, data capabilities and block different types of purchases like ringtones, in-app purchases and more.

Troubleshooting and Data Usage

  1. What happens if I start a session on 4G LTE network but move into 3G or 1X coverage?

PopData will continue to deliver unlimited data usage, with decreased data speeds.

  2. What happens if I start a session and then lose connectivity?

Your PopData connection lasts for the length of your session, either 30 or 60 minutes.

The timer runs for the purchased amount of contiguous minutes from the start of the session. It's not affected (delayed, paused or otherwise) by any activity or network connectivity.

  3. Where can I see my PopData usage?

You can see your PopData usage screen in My Verizon. Click on View data utilization link on the My Usage page.

Since PopData doesn’t use your plan data, it’s not included in any data usage tools, such as #DATA.

  4. How does the network determine if a PopData session is available?

Before you can start a session, we'll analyze network activity, strength and expected capacity for the next 30 minutes at the location where you make the request.

This doesn't guarantee that something unexpected won't occur, like moving to an area with poorer service or more network congestion.
