Transfer Contacts & Other Content Between Devices

The best way to transfer your pictures, videos, contacts and other content from one device to another depends on the operating systems you're using. Select the operating systems of your old and new devices to see step-by-step instructions.

I'm transferring content:

  1. Between Android® devices

    (ID 212879)

    Note Notes:

    • In order to transfer content, both devices must be in working order.
    • To move your content (e.g., contacts, pictures, music, etc.) from your current Android phone to your new Android phone using Google Drive, follow the steps below. 
    •  The following services can be used as well:

     

    1. From the Home screen of the current device, navigate: Google Folder > Drive Apps icon.
      Note If the Google folder is not visible, tap the Apps icon then tap the Drive icon.
    2. Tap the Menu icon (located upper-left).
      Tap the Menu
    3. Tap Settings.
      Tap Settings
    4. Under the 'Google Photos' section, tap the Auto Add switch to turn on to allow photos to be backed up and restored.

    5. If available, under the 'Auto Backup for apps' section, tap Backup and reset.
      Tap Backup and Reset
    6. Confirm the 'Back up my data' and the 'Automatic Restore' switches are turned on.
      Note If 'Back up my data' is turned off, tap on it and then tap the switch to turn on.

    7. Verify the account listed is the Google account associated with both devices.
      Note If the account needs to be changed, tap Backup Account then tap or add the correct Google account used with both devices.

    8. Tap the Home button on the device to return to the main screen (at the bottom).
    9. Navigate: Apps > Settings > Accounts > Google > Google Account.
      Note On Pixel devices, tap Account sync instead of Google Account.
    10. Tap the switch(es) to turn on all options you want backed up (e.g., Calendar, Contacts, etc.)

    11. Tap the Menu icon Menu icon (located upper-right) then tap Sync now.
      Note Ensure your Wi-Fi or Data is enabled for content transfer.
      Tap Sync Now
    12. Turn off your old device.
    13. Turn on your new device and complete the activation and setup process. 
    14. From the Home screen of the new device, navigate: Google Folder > Drive Apps icon.
      Note If the Google folder isn't visible, tap the Apps icon then tap Google Drive.
      Note If presented, enter your PIN, password or pattern.
    15. From the 'My Drive' main screen, tap the Menu icon (located upper-left).
      Tap the Menu Icon
    16. Tap Settings.
      Tap Settings
    17. Under the 'Google Photos' section, tap the Auto Add switch to turn on.
      Note Allows photos to be backed up and restored when turned on.

    Note Make sure all of your content has been transferred to your new device. If any content is missing, check your other cloud services to see if any content needs to be transferred from them. You can use the Download content Transfer App to move additional missing content from your current device to the new device.

  2. Between Apple® devices

    • To move your content (e.g., contacts, photos, music, etc.) from your current iPhone to a new one, follow the steps below.

     

    iCloud Backup (current iPhone)

    iCloud Backup (current iPhone)

    1. From the Home screen of your current phone, tap Settings.
    2. Tap the Apple profile (e.g., John Doe) at the top of the Settings menu.
      Tap the Apple Profile
    3. Tap iCloud.
      Note If prompted, enter the Apple ID and password then tap Sign In.
      Tap iCloud
    4. Tap the switch to turn on On Switch or off Off Switch the ability to back up that specific app (e.g., Mail, Contacts, etc.).
      Note When the switch is turned on, the data is backed up to iCloud.
      Note When the switch is turned off, the data is not backed up and any data already backed up to iCloud is removed.

    5. If prompted, select one of the following:
      • Delete from My iPhone
      • Keep on My iPhone
    6. Tap iCloud Backup.

    7. Tap the iCloud Backup switch to turn it on On Switch or off Off Switch.

    8. If prompted, tap OK.
    9. Tap Back Up Now to immediately add or remove data from iCloud.
      Note A Wi-Fi connection is needed to start the backup.
      1. Tap iCloud (located in the upper-left).
      2. Tap Apple ID (located in the upper-left).
      3. Tap Settings (located in the upper-left).
      4. Tap Wi-Fi.
      5. Make sure the Wi-Fi switch (located in the upper-right) is turned on On Switch.
      6. From the Choose A Network section, tap the preferred network.
        Note If prompted, enter the appropriate password then tap Join (located in the upper-right).

    iCloud Restore content (new iPhone)

    1. After activating your new phone and during initial setup, tap Restore from iCloud Backup from the Apps & Data screen.

    2. Using your Apple ID, sign in to iCloud.

    3. To continue, read the Terms and Conditions then tap Agree (located in lower-right).

    4. Tap a backup file from the list displayed to complete the restore process.

    5. Tap Continue to restore settings from iCloud backup.
      Note A screen with a progress bar is shown until the Restore completes.

     

    Note Notes:

    • Ensure all of your content is transferred. If any content is missing on your new iPhone, check to see if content needs to be moved from other cloud services (e.g., Verizon Cloud, Google, etc.) and/or use the content Transfer app available on the App Store.
    • View this support page for additional activation support (login to My Verizon required).

  3. From Apple to Android

    (ID 213020)

    To easily move your content (e.g., contacts, pictures, music, etc.) from your current Apple phone to your new Android phone using the content Transfer app follow these steps.

     

    Caution Any contacts or media backed up to any Cloud service (e.g., Verizon Cloud, iCloud, Google Drive, etc.) are not transferred by the content Transfer app and need to be restored to the device using the same service. The content Transfer app only transfers contacts, media, etc. to the new device that haven't already been backed up to a cloud service.

    Note Notes:

    • How long it takes to transfer your content is determined by how many files you are transferring and the size of the files.

    Apple is the Old Device   Android is the New Device
         

    1. From the App Store, download and install the content Transfer app content Transfer App Icon.

     

    1. From the Play Store, download and install the content Transfer app content Transfer App Icon.

    2. While in the content Transfer app on both phones, tap Start Transfer.

    6. Verify that both phones are on the same Wi-Fi network then tap Next.

    1. Tap Wi-Fi Settings.
    2. Tap the appropriate Wi-Fi network. If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi password then tap Join.
    3. Once connected, tap the back arrow to return to content Transfer (located upper-left).

    13. Verify the phones are on the same Wi-Fi network then tap Next.

    7. Enter the code being displayed on the new phone then tap Connect.

      14. Enter the code from the new phone into the old phone.

    8. Select the desired media to transfer to the new phone then tap Transfer.
    Note Selected when a check mark is present.

    16. If prompted to change your default messaging app, tap OK.

    Activate your new phone by using the instructions included in the box with the phone.

    Make sure all of your content has been transferred to your new phone.  If any content is missing on your new phone check your cloud services (e.g., Verizon CloudiCloudGoogle Drive, etc.) to see if any content needs to be transferred from them.

  4. From Android to Apple

    • In order to transfer content, both devices must be in working order.
    • To use the Move to iOS app, download it from the Google Play Store on an Android 4.0 or later device with Wi-Fi turned on.
    • Ensure your iPhone (5 or later model) is on iOS 9 or a later version.

     

    1. Plug both devices into a power source as this process may drain the battery.
    2. While setting up the new iOS device, look for the 'Apps & Data' screen.
      Note The 'Apps & Data' only appears on the iOS device during setup.
    3. From the 'Apps & Data' screen, tap Move Data from Android.
      Note Make sure the content you are moving (including what may be on the external Micro SD card) can fit onto the iOS device.
    4. On your Android phone, go to the Google Play Store and install Move to iOS app.
    5. To continue, choose Accept.

    6. On the Android device, open the 'Move to iOS' app then tap OPEN.

    8. To continue, review the Terms and Conditions on your Android device then tap Agree.

    9. From the Android device, tap Next (upper-right).

    10. Enter Code from the iPhone or iPad on your Android device.

    11. From the 'Move from Android' screen on the iOS device, tap Continue.
    12. On the Android device, enter the 6 or 10 digit code that appears in the space provided.
    13. From the 'Transfer Data' screen on the iOS device, select the content to transfer then tap Next
      Note This process may take a significant amount of time depending on how much data is being transferred. Leave both devices untouched until the iOS device shows it's finished.
    14. After the loading bar finishes on the iOS device, tap Done on the Android device then tap Continue on the iOS device to finish setting up the iOS device.

  5. From a basic phone to smartphone

    Note To easily move your contacts from your current basic phone to your new smartphone, follow these steps.

    3G Basic Phones

    1. From the main screen of the basic phone, select Menu.
      Note Utilize the 5-way navigation pad to highlight and the center / OK button to select.
    2. Navigate: Contacts > Backup Assistant.
    3. Press the right soft key to select Backup Now.
      Select Backup Now
    4. Follow the instructions included in the box to activate your smartphone then open Verizon Cloud to download contacts to your new phone.
      Note Contacts are automatically restored to the device. Depending on how many contacts you have this could take several minutes.

     

    4G Basic Phones

    1. From the main screen of the basic phone, select Menu.
      Note Utilize the 5-way navigation pad to highlight and the center / OK button to select.
    2. Select Verizon apps / Media Center.
    3. Select Cloud then select Back Up Now.
      Note The number of backed up contacts displays on the screen.
    4. Follow the instructions included in the box to activate your smartphone then open Verizon Cloud to download contacts to your new phone.
      Note Contacts are automatically restored to the device. Depending on how many contacts you have this could take several minutes.

  7. The Content Transfer app

    To transfer your content using the Content Transfer app:

    1. Download the Verizon Content Transfer app to your old phone from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

    2. Activate your new phone and download the Content Transfer app.

    3. Open the Verizon Content Transfer app on both phones, place your old and new phones side-by-side and follow the prompts to transfer your content to your new device. They don't need to be physically connected.

    Note: When using the Content Transfer app to move messages to an Android® phone, a pop-up screen asks if you want to change your default text messaging app. You must tap Yes to avoid losing your text messages. You can change your default messaging app after the content transfer is complete.

    You've successfully transferred your content to your new phone.

  9. If none of the above options apply to you, there are several additional ways you can move your content to a new device:

  10. Verizon Cloud

    To transfer your content using Verizon Cloud:

    1. Connect your phone to Wi-Fi (to avoid data charges) and download the latest version of the Verizon Cloud app from the Google Play™ Store or Apple® App Store®.

    2. Open the Verizon Cloud app on your old phone and follow the onscreen instructions. Your first backup can take a while, but you'll be notified when your backup is complete.

    3. Once the backup is finished, activate your new phone and open the Verizon Cloud app to access your content.

    You've successfully transferred your content with Verizon Cloud.
